Central Norway Transmission Lines

The Context
To strengthen the reliability of electricity supply in Central Norway, Statnett launched the construction of the Ørskog–Fardal–Kvandal/Bardufoss/Balsfjord transmission line programme.
The project was developed across the challenging terrain of Norway’s western and central fjord region, where SELT contributed to the construction of one of the country’s most significant transmission infrastructure projects.
The Challenge
Extreme weather conditions and the complex topography made conventional construction methods impractical, requiring meticulous planning and rigorous safety management throughout the project.
Helicopters were frequently the only viable means of transporting personnel and equipment to the work sites.
The crossing of the Norwegian fjords required single-span conductor stringing over distances exceeding 3,200 metres—an exceptional engineering achievement that represented a first for an Italian contractor.
Despite these challenging conditions, the project was completed one year ahead of schedule.
An International Team
Working with a multinational workforce and operating regularly on international projects has enabled SELT to develop strong expertise in managing multicultural teams and complex cross-border projects.
The successful delivery of the Norwegian project reflects this capability and was recognised by Statnett through the positive assessment of its site inspector, Jørn Svingeset, who acknowledged the significant technical progress achieved during the works.
